The Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on Saturday, August 1, 2020, commissioned the Youth in Greenhouse Enterprise Project – KNUST. The greenhouses sited on KNUST campus is funded by Ghana EXIM Bank and implemented by Agri-Impact Consult (AIC).
The project seeks to promote investment in greenhouse technology; production of high-quality produce which would cut down considerably persistent importation of vegetables and creation of sustainable and viable jobs for the teeming youth in the urban and peri-urban areas across the country. The commissioning had in attendance members of the university council headed by the Vice Chancellor Professor Akosua Dickson, other dignitaries and diplomats from all walks of life.
Delivering his remarks at the ceremony, His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, encouraged beneficiaries to embrace greenhouse technology and develop passion for the path they have chosen. He stated that Greenhouse technology is increasingly becoming a part of our agricultural space and was impressed by the fact that the process is being championed by graduates from the university. He reiterated that, the future belongs to the youth and should not take for granted the opportunity handed down to them.
The Asantehene expressed his gratitude to donors GHANA EXIM Bank, the team from Agri-Impact Consult, beneficiaries and other key stakeholders for a good work done.
Youth Greenhouse Enterprise Project (YUGEP) is an initiative of Ghana EXIM Bank to promote investment in greenhouse vegetable production, with agri-impact as the consulting and management firm for the project. It involves construction and installation of one hundred (100) greenhouses in Ashanti, Greater Accra, Volta, Central, Western and Eastern regions to produce fresh vegetables for the domestic market. The project is providing technical and financial assistance to at least one hundred (100) young entrepreneurs including tertiary graduates to own and manage the greenhouses.
